In the late 1980’s Alan McMackin made Whitby the home of his litigation practice. He purchased a building on Green Street, as well as a Bayfield 36′ which he had at the Whitby Marina for over 15 years. Alan’s son Ryan followed his footsteps and began working for the firm in 2014. Alan was a Whitby lawyer until 2016 when he moved the practice to Bowmanville. He worked from the Bowmanville office until retiring from the practice of law in 2019. Alan is currently a Deputy Judge and the litigation practice is now run by Ryan under Alan’s guidance and mentorship.
Alan had a successful career in which he positively impacted the lives of countless businesses and individuals, argued before the Supreme Court of Canada and won dozens and dozens of trials. When Ryan joined the practice, Alan had Ryan handling all aspects of litigation matters including trials in his first year of practice. Through Alan’s continued guidance and mentoring Ryan has become a talented litigation lawyer just as Alan was.
Ryan recognizes that most clients are focused on two things. Firstly, they want results in line with their goals and expectations. The other thing highly important to clients is communication. Clients want to know what is going on in their files and to be kept up to date. Ryan provides each client of the practice his direct business cell phone number. This will allow you to speak directly with Ryan so that you are not stuck speaking with law clerks or secretaries.
Every client has different goals and needs in a litigation matter. For some this experience will be new and stressful while for others it can be exciting. One of the most important things is to have proper expectations going into the matter. When you meet with Ryan, he will not sell you false assurances that your case is an automatic or sure winner. You will be told both the positives, negatives and potential arguments Ryan can foresee for and against your case. Expectations need to be appropriately set from the beginning.
Each individual / business has different risk tolerances. From the outset Ryan will discuss this with you and try to formulate a plan suitable to your needs. Every case and every client are important.
